There are a number of ways to bring your concerns to the attention of the Board of Aldermen and the City of Southport staff.

If your question or concern involves a specific city department please contact the department head.  For contact information for each department CLICK  HERE

If you’re not sure where to go, whom to ask, what to do, feel free to contact me or any other Alderman.  Each Alderman represents all of the citizens of Southport.

You can contact me in any manner you choose.  Get my contact information by clicking on the CONTACT KEN menu item above and to the left, or by CLICKING HERE.

Of course, you can speak during the public comment period at all Board of Aldermen meetings.  The advantage of this method is that your comments become part of that meeting’s official minutes.

Brainstorming Sessions:  I’ll be conducting brainstorming sessions on a number of key issues facing our city.  They will be done via e-mail to me (aldermanken@bellsouth.net) or through my blog comment section (see menu above left).  I’ll collate the comments and ideas and post them on this site for all to see and discuss.  The posted comments will be anonymous unless the person wants me to use his/her name.

Here is a list of issues that will hopefully be addressed in the coming months:

Study and negotiate with county: areas of double taxation. Mayor Robert Howard began by studying the Southport Rescue Squad, he recommended that the rescue function be turned over to Brunswick County despite the increase in response time, Board voted to retain our current rescue squad and find ways to fund their capital improvements. No other city services have been evaluated by Mayor Howard since May 2, 2011.

Finalize a plan for the development of Fort Johnston Historical Site. Funding approved 12/8/2011 for $48.200. The plan was developed by Director of Tourism & Economic Development Cindy Brochure with help from the Visitor’s Center volunteers, the Southport Historical Society and others.

The news section will be discontinued for the following reasons:

This information is redundant because it is contained in the minutes (see below).

The new Southport website will contain updated news, events, board actions and much more when it launches in the next 3-4 months.

I get the feeling that very few folks actually read this and it is extremely time consuming.

If you do read this and want more information please e-mail me.

The link below connects to the Board of Aldermen minutes. They are posted as soon as they are approved (after the regular board meeting following the meeting minutes). The new Southport website will contain meeting minutes for all city committees and boards.

Southport Rescue Squad

The Board of Aldermen voted to keep the rescue squad at the special meeting on May 2, 2011. I made the motion to keep the rescue squad after some of the most insightful and informative public comments we have received during my time on the board. Two Aldermen (see below) and the Mayor felt that we should wait and vote on the matter at our next board meeting. 3 of us decided that we’ve had plenty of time to gather all the necessary information and make a decision. This issue has been hanging over the rescue squad for over a year! It was about time we settled the matter.

The recommendation from the Mayor was that the board consider eliminating the rescue squad.  The vote was 3 in favor of keeping the rescue squad (me, Ed Boguskie and Vickie Potter) and 2 against (Mary Ellen Poole and Nelson Adams).

On June 14, 2011 the Rescue Squad requested permission to solicit bids to purchase a new primary support vehicle (total cost estimated to be $120,000). This cost would be borne by the City. The Board voted 3-3 with the mayor breaking the tie to deny this request. (Karn, Boguskie & Potter voted to approve , Poole, Adams and Frink voted to deny the request).

If you want to show your support for the Southport Rescue Squad so that the city will provide them with the resources necessary to function with up-to-date equipment and facilities, please e-mail Alderman Poole, Barnes, Coring and Powell as well as the mayor.

The Southport Rescue Squad Auxiliary now accepts donations to help the squad.
