While we can’t choose where we are born, once our jobs and careers release their grip on us we can live anywhere we want.  My wife and I chose Southport.  She would be moving back to her native state and closer to family near Raleigh and Sanford, but I was the one who insisted we move to North Carolina.

My first experiences in the South were visits to my in-laws and I became enraptured with the Southern lifestyle.  It is more calm, more kind, more friendly and filled with regional pride and loyalty I’d never before experienced.  Southport has all of these traits–and more. While I’ve been told many times that I’ll never be a “true” Southerner, I certainly feel like I belong here.

My goal on moving to Southport was to fully embrace the local lifestyle.  I wanted to toss aside many of the influences and expectations I acquired from living in other areas, and everybody who knows me from my previous home says I’m a better person for it.

I began my life here writing a blog on the Star News Brunswick Voice web site entitled “The Yankee Traitor” where I wrote about the inability (or outright refusal) of recent, non-Southern residents to embrace the attitudes and mind set of the longtime locals and native Southerners. My fear is that Southern culture is being overwhelmed by newcomers who insist on making over their new home in the image of their previous one.  I have no such agenda, especially when it comes to local government.  Remember, I’m from California.

What I do bring to the the office of Alderman is honesty, an open mind, experience in business management and politics, and an insistence we solicit and use public input when making decisions.  I have no agenda other than to make Southport government transparent and responsive to the needs and desires of our citizens.  I’m also not bound to any special interest group or influenced by personal issues or grudges against anybody in our city.
